Meet the family – Our ratties

Here are our beautiful fur-babies! Well here’s three of them anyway. Allow me to introduce you to Heidi, the grey and white dumbo rat, Gwen, the albino and Sherlock, the other one πŸ˜‰

Our pet rats are not just animals, they are part of our family. They each have their own little personalities and we love them for it.

Heidi is just so squishy, I want to cuddle up with her and snuggle her little face. She is so adorable. I know many people don’t like rats, they’re afraid of them or think they are disease ridden. I used to be so scared of them too; but they are beautiful, intelligent and loving creatures.

Gwen is an albino rat, albino rats have severely reduced visibility. This makes her quite cautious of her surroundings, more so than the other two. She has given some nasty bites in the past but only because she can’t see what your finger is, she’s just protecting herself. I’ve managed to escape her dreaded bite so far! She is such a magnificent animal though, she sits and watches you, slowly moving her head from side to side in order to get you in focus. If she’s preoccupied, mainly when she’s eating, you can stroke her and she won’t bother you or when she’s climbing up the side of her cage you can tickle her belly through the bars. You have to be quick though or else it’s ‘bye bye finger’.

I’m pretty sure that with Sherlock’s colouring she is described as ‘chocolate’, please correct me if I’m wrong, rat experts πŸ™‚ She’s definitely the bravest of the three, she will quite happily climb in to your dressing gown sleeve and wander around in there for a while. Heidi sometimes comes and has a sniff but she always keeps one foot on the cage, she will however lick you to death. We have recently discovered that Sherlock will give you kisses, yes kisses. Some people might think this is weird but we love it, it’s so damn cuteΒ β™₯

I love all the little silly things they do, like yawning. It is adorable! Or when we feed them and they’re not satisfied with one nugget in their mouth, they have to squash another one in there, then try to carry two more only to discover that now they can’t actually walk… Heidi seems to have developed some weird exercise obsession, can rats become vain? After every meal she jumps on the wheel as though trying to burn off the calories, she needs to look her best.

All three of them like to have their bellies tickled as they climb up the side of the cage. To be honest they don’t have a choice in the matter, if their belly is on show it is getting tickled.

Our house wouldn’t be home without them, they are there waiting patiently in the morning, their cute little faces asking for some toast or porridge. Or they will stick their little heads out of the bed and look up expectantly at you “Do you have food hooman”? Basically all they want is food, the don’t care that they look adorable or that you think they look adorable, if you have food you’re in or if you have fingers.

I promise you that they aren’t as horrible as you first think. Whenever I tell people we have pet rats I’m met with disgust and shudders of horror; but they are so sweet, they’ve just been given a bad name because of their ancestors. Do you blame the Germans of today for what Hitler did? Think about it…

Don’t ever let anyone make you think you’re not good enough.Β
