Nature vs Nurture?

Just stop being a miserable t**twaffle…

A long running argument in the world of psychology is Nature vs Nurture. The debate is focused on whether or not our attitudes, principals, morals etc, our core good or bad is naturally ingrained or we learn that behaviour.

Is it as simple as you’re either a good person or a bad person?

Some people argue that the way we behave, our attitudes, principles, morals etc are natural and then the other side of the argument is that you’re basically born as a clean slate and you’re nurtured in to the way you behave. You learn your attitudes and behaviours from your surroundings and parental figures.

That, in a nut shell, is the Nature vs Nurture debate.

Now I’m not a psychologist but evidence would suggest that neither of this is wholly correct. Experts will generally agree that the results are 50/50.

It’s easy to see that the Nature vs Nurture debate does not have a definitive winner, there is an element of influence from both.

It’s easy to see in a group of siblings that even though they’ve grown up in the same environment they can be very different people regarding their behaviours, morals and not just personality wise.

This is obviously not a scientific journal piece, I just wanted to touch briefly on the concept of Nature vs Nurture because there are lots of arseholes around and it got me thinking about why they are the way they are.

I do realise that your surroundings, the environment you are raised in and the people around you will have some influence on the person you become and the way you behave. The things you experience, any traumas you might have faced will all have a bearing on how you face the world.

Ultimately though it is down to you how you behave.

I know people who have been through hell. Serious horrendous things have happened to these people. Traumas and circumstances that you wouldn’t believe and they are the nicest, most level headed, decent human beings you will ever have the good fortune to meet.

Then on the other hand I know people who have gone through similar injustices and they are the nastiest, most self centred, angry pieces of s**t you’ll ever have the bad luck to encounter.

Is this just in their nature? Good people are just good people and always will be? No matter what happens to them? Bad people are just bad people?

Is it a case of the naturally good people have endured such horrific things that they couldn’t bear to think of hurting someone and the naturally bad people see it as being unfair that they were treat so badly and see it as being only right that others should feel pain as they have?

There are literally millions of people in the world walking around right now actively not being an arsehole and yet there’s always one in your life who just thrives on being a giant, miserable, ass hat.

Why?

Please get over yourself. The world does not revolve around you and it really isn’t difficult to be pleasant, even to people that you don’t like. I know because I do it every day πŸ˜‰
