I met Bernadette O’Horo ( Bernie the Bolt) at UK Indie Lit Fest, two years ago. Her poetry is phenomenal and it’s only a matter of time before she’s up in Dictionary Corner on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown with the likes of John Cooper Clark!
Bernie has recently created High Five – Spoken Word, an open mic night for poets, storytellers and all-around awesome people. This event started back in December and runs once a month at the most amazing quirky barista lounge in Haworth, Industry Barista.
I went along last week to support Bernie’s endeavour and to catch up with some old Lit Fest buddies.
It’s not very often that you meet a like-minded person, who you can admire, draw inspiration from and actually have a conversation with. So when you discover a whole group of these people, you cherish them. I love these guys, and it was such a pleasure, as always, to be in their presence!
The talent in that cosy little cafe was outstanding. Not only did I get to hear the lyrical stylings of Bernie The Bolt and the comedic quips from David Driver and William Coniston, accompanied by the inspiring words of wisdom from the sensational Sharena Lee Satti.
I was also introduced to the wonderful Marian Barker and Tyra Aliya and the incredibly talented Benjamin Guilfoyle.
Benjamin is going to be taking his awesome poetry on the road very soon, with his Wandering Poet Tour, he will be walking from venue to venue and also relying on the good nature of his audience members to put him for the night (every night) as he raises awareness and funds for the Lancaster Homeless Shelter and the Central Lancaster Children’s Library.
So, go check him out and the rest of these fabulous people and you should definitely join Bernie at the next open mic night! Which I believe is the 27th of March 🙂
